Birkenhead Market was first opened 10 July in 1835. The market was an essential part of the town’s early commercial development, supporting local trade and providing a bustling hub for merchants. Initially set up near Hamilton Square, the market was built on land donated by Francis Price to accommodate the town’s growing population.
Birkenhead Park, the world’s first publicly funded park, opened nearby in 1847, bringing more visitors and enhancing the market’s popularity due to increased footfall from park visitors.
The market was expanded and relocated to a more modern site, closer to Hamilton Square, reflecting the growth of Birkenhead as an industrial and commercial center.
Suffered it’s first of 2 major fires. It was not severe enough to close the entire building and continued to trade.
A significant fire in 1974 devastated the original Victorian-era market buildings. This event marked a turning point in the market’s history, leading to major rebuilding efforts.
After the fire, Birkenhead Market was rebuilt on its now current site. The new building opened in 1977, designed to accommodate modern needs while retaining the character of the historic market.
2026 will see a new Market Hall open within the town centre of Birkenhead in what once was the occupied by retailer Argos on Princess Pavements. A stones through away from its current site.
